Introduction:
As the digital age continues to shape our creative landscapes, the conceptual use of artificial intelligence (AI) in long-term artistic endeavors is a topic ripe for exploration. In my recent two-hour session with Suno and GPT-3.5, I delved into the world of AI-generated music and lyrics, uncovering insights and pondering the implications of this evolving technology.
Experience:
The experience was a fascinating blend of excitement and reflection. As someone with ADHD, Autism, CPTSD, and DID, I found the process both affirming and accessible. Themes of Final Fantasy, X-Men Comics, and other pop culture references seamlessly intertwined with my personal journey, showcasing the potential of AI to resonate with diverse audiences.
However, amidst the excitement, there lingered a palpable sense of unease. While AI tools like Suno and GPT-3.5 offer incredible creative possibilities, they also raise valid concerns. As musician Adam Neely aptly observes, AI-generated music won't replace human creation; rather, it stands alongside it, offering new avenues for exploration.
Indeed, the fear of AI is valid, but it's essential to recognize that many of us already incorporate technology into our creative processes. From AI-based VST plugins to machine learning algorithms, technology has become an integral part of modern music production. Yet, there's something uniquely human about the imperfections and mistakes inherent in our creations, a quality that AI struggles to replicate.
Anecdotal Comments on the Lyrics:
The lyrics we generated during the session offer a glimpse into the intersection of personal experiences and pop culture influences. Lines like "Jumpin' through dimensions, cloud surfin' through cosmos" evoke a sense of adventure and escapism, mirroring the themes of Final Fantasy and other fantastical worlds.
Meanwhile, phrases such as "Crystal shards cut, summer '10s on replay" capture the nostalgia and introspection often associated with music. These lyrics serve as a testament to the power of AI to translate complex emotions and concepts into poetic language, albeit with a digital twist.
Reflecting on the broader landscape of AI music tools, I couldn't help but compare Suno and Udio. While Suno offered a quick and intuitive experience, Udio's commercial focus left me feeling wary of its long-term implications. Transparency regarding training data and privacy policies is crucial, and Suno's commitment to open-source and royalty-free content is commendable.
Despite the challenges and uncertainties, the potential of AI in music production is undeniable. The Song Maker plugin for ChatGPT, while slightly confusing, provided valuable insights into song structure and composition. While there's still much to learn about the ethics of AI tools, it's essential to navigate these discussions with an open mind and a willingness to adapt.
My journey through Suno and GPT-3.5 was both enlightening and thought-provoking. While AI may never replace the human touch in music creation, it offers exciting possibilities for collaboration and experimentation. As I continue to explore this evolving landscape, I invite others to join me in embracing the creative potential of AI while remaining vigilant about its ethical implications.

Conclusion
I'm not going to sugarcoat it - I've been skeptical of AI music in the past. But, with my partner being sick and me being bored out of my mind, I decided to take the plunge and experiment with it. And, let me tell you, it's been an interesting ride.
As the hype surrounding AI continues to surge, it's increasingly challenging to discern genuine innovation from fleeting trends. Many review platforms are inundated with paid endorsements or tech enthusiasts eagerly embracing every new gadget. However, amidst the noise, skepticism persists. The fallout from previous speculative crazes like Bitcoin and NFTs has left many wary of blindly trusting technology without a solid foundation. Projects like GamaCoin and RabbitAI serve as cautionary tales, highlighting the risks of investing in flashy promises without substance. Moreover, platforms like Udio, driven by top investors' interests, further erode trust, particularly among those who've witnessed the fallout of shady dealings in the tech world.
While corporations embrace AI for its cost-effectiveness and efficiency, the human toll often goes overlooked. While widespread layoffs may not be rampant, pockets of professionals in various industries, from designers to writers, feel the pinch as AI encroaches on their turf. Yet, amidst these concerns, it's crucial to view AI not as an enemy but as a tool—a tool that democratizes access to creative industries once monopolized by gatekeepers. Just as night-time painting classes democratized art, AI offers a similar opportunity for aspiring creators to explore their talents without the barriers of exorbitant costs or years of formal training. In the realm of music, AI has enabled individuals to compose and produce music with unprecedented ease and accessibility, opening doors for aspiring musicians and challenging traditional notions of creativity. However, with this accessibility comes the responsibility to remain vigilant against corporations' unchecked automation agendas, ensuring that the human element remains integral to the creative process.
Navigating the AI landscape requires a delicate balance of excitement and caution. While the allure of effortless creation and newfound accessibility is undeniable, it's essential to remain mindful of the broader implications for both individuals and industries. By embracing AI as a tool for empowerment rather than a harbinger of obsolescence, we can harness its potential to drive meaningful innovation while preserving the human touch that makes artistry truly remarkable.
The Limitations of AI Music
One thing I've noticed is that AI music is only reasonably good at creating music that's over-polished and semi-computer generated. It's not great at creating music from before 1980, and I've gotten some pretty hilarious results trying to get it to create 1960s-style music. Think country, poorly made Kmart tapes, or McDonald's Polish fusion - yeah, it's been a wild ride.
The Exception: Swing-Jazz
However, I did find that AI music is surprisingly good at creating swing-jazz music, which has had a resurgence in popularity in recent years thanks to genres like ska and electro swing.
My Experience with AI Music
I've been playing around with AI music tools, and I have to say, it's been a lot of fun. I've created some ridiculous songs, including ones about lactose intolerance and getting off my lawn. I'm even working on a YouTube video with a funky Midjourney wallpaper I created.
Releasing AI Music Commercially?
As for releasing any of this music commercially, I'm not ruling it out. But, I do want to task my audience with giving me some dumb ideas for generated lyrics and genre mashups. I've always been someone who likes to mix and match different ideas, and AI music is no exception.
Why Now?
Some of you may be wondering why I'm suddenly experimenting with AI music, given my past skepticism. The truth is, I've always been 50/50 on AI - I think it has its uses, but it also has its limitations. And, as someone who's always been interested in technology, I want to see where AI music can take us.
The Future of AI Music
I do think that AI music has the potential to be more damaging than AI generative art in the long term, especially when it comes to large music companies pushing away small artists and independent creators. But, I also think that we need to experiment and see where this technology takes us. Who knows, maybe we'll come up with something new and innovative that changes the game.
So, that's my take on AI music. It's not perfect, but it's been a fun experiment. And, who knows, maybe I'll even release a meme album or two. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the ridiculousness that is my AI music journey.
