Accommodations for Accessibility in AI Art Spaces

Accommodations for Accessibility in AI Art Spaces

In this article, we will discuss the perspectives of mental health and mental disabilities, as well as some physical disabilities, in AI art spaces. While this is not an article about demanding accommodations, it aims to explore how AI can be used to create more accessible spaces for individuals who may benefit from them.

It is important to note that the perspectives shared in this article are based on our own experiences. We have been diagnosed with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Dissociative Identity Disorder. We acknowledge that there are others in the world who share similar experiences.

However, we are unable to speak extensively on physical disabilities, as our knowledge is limited to what we have learned from friends and family or seen on social media. Additionally, this article is not extensively researched and is primarily based on personal opinions and encounters within the community.

Dissociative State of Being: Faces and Spaces

One significant aspect we can speak on is our experience with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and the broader community of individuals who identify as "PLURAL." While there are various terms used to describe this experience, "PLURAL" is a popular terminology. Some individuals still use outdated terms like "Multiple Personality Disorder," but it is important to respect individuals' preferred terminology.

For those who identify as plural, AI art provides an alternative to using realistic photos, stock photos, or even Picrews to visually represent their alters, system mates, or headmates. AI art allows us to find faces that represent the worlds we feel we come from, whether they are fictional or otherwise.

In our plural support Discord servers and on platforms like Tumblr, we have created spaces such as the "THIS ALTER DOES NOT EXIST" or "HEADMATE GALLERY." These spaces allow us to share AI-generated images that represent our alters or headmates. While we initially started on Tumblr, we have since moved these galleries to our Earth & Dusk Discord server to focus on AI-related discussions.

The Headmate Gallery @ Discord

The Headmate Gallery in our Discord server follows a forum-style format to create a gallery-like experience. Currently, it features contributions from our members and staff. The guidelines for posting in the gallery include uploading images of generated characters, themes, or other related content to help others in the community.

For example, if someone is in need of images featuring "NEKO" or cat-like people, AI-generated images can fulfill that need. We have used models like Epicv6, inspired by Dreamshaper, to generate additional content for specific themes. This concept can be applied to other servers or even booru-style websites dedicated to this purpose.

Other Accommodations

If you are interested, you could consider installing the PluralKit bot on your server. However, be cautious as this can potentially reveal the presence of systems that may not have been ready to disclose their status. PluralKit is designed for plural communities on Discord and allows you to register systems, maintain system information, set up message proxying, log switches, and more.

To ensure a supportive and inclusive environment, it is crucial to establish additional rules in your server. This includes having an open and inclusive community, correcting misinformation about DID/OSDD, and not tolerating ableism or abuse of the PluralKit bot.

Attention Span and Dexterity + The "LACK" of Emotions

In terms of accommodating individuals with ADHD, AI art itself can be seen as an accommodation for their needs. However, it is important to provide constructive feedback and suggestions if someone with ADHD is producing a large volume of content. Understanding that individuals with ADHD may miss social cues or misinterpret jokes is also crucial in maintaining positive interactions.

For individuals with Autism and Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), AI art can be a valuable tool. However, it is important to be mindful of how certain content may trigger trauma responses. While it may be challenging to implement stricter rules around sexual content, being considerate and understanding when responding to certain content can go a long way in creating a more accommodating environment.

Supporting LGBTQIA+ and Other Content

While not everyone may support LGBTQIA+ individuals, it would be beneficial for more model creators to show support for pride in their work. This does not mean that everyone has to download or enjoy the content, but it can create a more inclusive atmosphere.

AI art, despite its biases, unintentionally supports the LGBTQIA+ community by allowing for the creation of content that represents diverse identities. It is important to remember that the internet has a wide range of content, including explicit material. While it may be challenging to regulate this, being mindful of responses and avoiding cruelty or rudeness towards LGBTQIA+ individuals is essential.

Conclusion

In conclusion, AI art spaces offer opportunities for accessibility and accommodation for individuals with mental health and mental disabilities, as well as some physical disabilities. By understanding and respecting the perspectives of various communities, we can work towards creating more inclusive and supportive environments within AI art spaces.
